Understanding Ghost Towns

We will start out at the Port Moody Museum, and learn for a few minutes about Port Moody's historic past. Then, we'll take a quick ride over to the small Ghost Town of IOCO. Once a busy company town, and now just a series of abandoned houses.

You'll learn what happened, where did all the people go, and what's happening in IOCO now?

To explore this experience together, we can...: You will smell the lush trees, hear the IOCO creek, see the decaying homes, hear animals, touch artifacts
-: You'll go through the town and determine what you think happened to make everyone leave. And we will talk about the history, all while taking photos of the buildings that are left. And have lots of photo ops!
-: At the end, you'll understand a bit more about local boomtown history, how buildings decay, the politics of abandoned places, and new way to think about the people who used to live where we live.
How many Kudoers could come at once?: 1 person at one time
This experience is:
Wheel chair accessible
Can be done with hearing impaired
Can be done with blind or visually impaired
This happens: outside
Getting here: What you need to know.
You can get to the meetup location by bus or by the West Coast Express Train. It takes most people about 10 minutes to get from the nearest transit stop to the experience.

If you take the 160, 190, 867 or C24 buses and get off at the corner of St. John's and Moody St, there are sidewalks and ramped curbs all the way between the bus stop and the experience meetup location. There's one busy intersection to navigate, and there are traffic lights wiht walk signs at this intersection. If you take the West Coast Express and get off at the Port Moody Station, there are also sidewalks and ramped curbs and traffic lights with walk signs all the way. If you take the C25 or C26 buses and get off on Murray St., you'll be closer to the experience meetup location and you'll have a crosswalk to help you cross the one busy street to get there, but you'll have to go along a grass boulevard for the last bit of the way there, and navigate a ledge curb or two.

Nearest skytrain station: New Westminster - Braid
Skytrain meetup: Maybe: check with me
Should I bring money: No money is needed.
What else should I bring: Wet weather clothes, a camera, a note pad, and pen.
Afterwards, you could go to: There are loads of Ghost Towns in BC! Take a weekend trip with your family/friends into the Cariboo region, or into the Kootenays! We can talk about other local sites as well.
Afterwards, you could attend: A lot of paranormal groups go to older sites, I don't really believe in ghosts, but maybe it'll be of interest? http://www.meetup.com/KerLes-Original-Ghost-Gang-of-the-Lower-Mainland/
